If you have plans to fly Spirit Airlines soon, you might be out of luck. Since the airline filed for bankruptcy in 2024, they have been trying to arrange a deal to keep the airline open, but that deal has fallen apart. No one wants to take a chance on the carrier after two bankruptcies.
Now the rising fuel costs have pushed them over the edge.
The airlines were negotiating with the government for a $500 million aid package, but the bondholders reportedly did not like the terms. President Trump indicated this was the final proposal.
CBS News has reported that the Trump administration has been told by Spirit they will shut down with “no last-minute administration effort regarding a bailout, according to sources familiar with the discussions.”
Spirit could shut down as early as 3 AM on May 2, 2026.
Sadly, if Spirit shuts down permanently, this could drive up airfare prices across the industry as one less carrier equals greater demand on other airlines.
What do you do if you have a pre-purchased ticket?
Do not cancel, but wait for the airline to shut down, so it is their fault that services were not rendered.
Some experts are saying that when the airline shuts down, contact your credit card company, as you may be able to get your money back. But Spirit will likely not refund you anytime soon.
If you are currently traveling and will now be stuck, you can see about booking a flight on another airline (but there will be an extra expense with a rescue fare).
American Airlines, United Airlines, and Frontier have already indicated they will step in to assist customers displaced by Spirit.
American Airlines has reportedly said it was “implementing fare caps on tickets in its “main cabin” tier for Spirit routes to cities where it also offers nonstop service.”
United Airlines told NBC News that they were getting ready to assist, saying, “We’re preparing to support Spirit customers and employees in the event of a shut down and we’ll likely have more to share later.”
Frontier has also said they plan to “support customers who may be impacted if Spirit Airlines ceases operations, with a focus on helping people continue their travel plans with low-fare options.”
There are airlines coming in to rescue as many people as they can.
If your flight is canceled, contact these three airlines right away to see if you can get another flight.
Another possibility is renting a car if you are within a reasonable driving distance. I would do this as soon as possible, as many others may also try to do the same.
At this point, it would take a government intervention or a miracle to stop the shutdown.
A lot of people could lose their jobs.
