The Annie Award winners have been announced, and Netflix / Sony’s “KPop Demon Hunters” dominated the event, beating out Disney’s “Elio” and “Zootopia 2” repeatedly. Disney did have some success with “Win or Lose,” but their major films were demolished by the Korean-inspired juggernaut.
For those who don’t know, the Annie Awards are like the Oscars for the animation industry. They award excellence in the field of animation, covering television, film, and other media.
What categories did KPop Demon Hunters beat Disney in?
- Best Editorial Feature – beating out “Elio”
- Best Writing Feature – beating “Elio” and “Zootopia 2”
- Best Voice Acting Feature – beating out “Elio”
- Best Production Design Feature – beating out “Elio” and “Zootopia 2”
- Best Music Feature – beating out “Elio” and “Zootopia 2” — to be fair it was unlikely anyone was going to beat “KPop Demon Hunters” in this category.
- Best Character Design Feature – beating out “Elio”
- Best Character Animation Feature- beating “Elio” and “Zootopia 2”
- Best FX Feature – beating “Elio” and “Zootopia 2”
- Best Feature – beating “Elio” and “Zootopia 2”
“KPop Demon Hunters” also won “Best Direction Feature”, pretty much sweeping the major awards for feature animation.
Heck, even “Bad Guys 2” beat out “Elio” and “Zootopia2″ for ‘Best Storyboarding.”
Disney / Pixar “Win or Lose” did win some awards.
The Disney+ show won “Best Music TV Media”, “Best Character Animation TV/Media”, and “Best TV Media Limited Series”.
Sometimes “Win or Lose” beat out “Star Wars” and “Marvel” offerings as well. Frankly, it was a good show.
Overall, “KPop Demon Hunters” was the big winner, blocking all the competition, including Disney and Pixar. Once upon a time, it was a given that Disney (or Pixar) would sweep animation awards, but it seems that times are changing.
Disney has been investing more in anime and K-Drama, bringing over more and more shows and partnering with studios for new shows of their own. This win for “KPop Demon Hunters” could lead Disney and other studios to invest more in features based on other cultures and more diverse voices.
