The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Already Breaking Records and Audience Reviews Are Solid

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ debuted yesterday, and it is already breaking records for April.

According to Deadline, the film has already hit $34.5 million in just the opening day (no previews) and is the best Wednesday opening ever for an April. To be fair that isn’t saying much. But it is also the top opening for 2026; again, it’s not saying a lot as we are only starting the fourth month of this year.

Worldwide, the opening is at over $68 million for Wednesday.

But it is heading for some big totals.

Estimates put the film at about $128.2M for the first three days and about $186M for the five-day total. Global estimates currently sit at $350 million to $375 million for the opening total.

Audience Reviews Are Solid

While critics have widely panned the film, giving it a 43% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have scored it at 91%. That could change, as it has only been out a day.

The Cinemascore is an”A-“, which is really good!

A Film For Nintendo and Mario Bros. Fans

This film isn’t as lacking in story as some critics say, but it isn’t a deep dive into the psyche of Mario. It’s a fun movie for fun’s sake that features beloved characters, nostalgic music, sounds, dialogue, and characters for those of us who love Nintendo.

Go for the fun, stay for the video game references. It is a movie you dive into and just go along for the ride. Turn your brain off and get excited when you see or hear things you remember from childhood or when you played last week.

I know my husband, daughter, and I enjoyed it. Solid 7.5-8/10.
