The popular Shrek franchise is perhaps the most recognizable property to come out of DreamWorks Animation, with How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda following closely behind. The series has had four films, two spin-off films, and a mountain of other forms of merchandise, including video games. Not to mention his popularity in the internet meme community.
The last film in the series, Shrek: Forever After, aka Shrek: The Final Chapter, was released in 2010, meaning that audiences have not seen the green ogre in 14 years. While the character of Puss in Boots received his series with a film in 2011 and a sequel in 2022, the main series has been stagnant. Rumors of a fifth film have been talked about for years, with there even being a small teaser at the end of the last Puss in Boots film.
Now, we may finally be returning to a land far, far away as actor Eddie Murphy, known for voicing Shrek’s iconic sidekick Donkey, has revealed that he has been working on Shrek 5 since the beginning of this year. In an interview with Weintraub, the actor said that not only is Shrek 5 on the way, but another spin-off is in the works too.
“We started doing Shrek 4 or [correction] Shrek 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey movie.“
While it is interesting that we now have confirmation that Shrek 5 is indeed being worked on and may be released sometime next year, the most interesting reveal is that a Donkey focus spin-off is in the works as well.
While Donkey does make up the core cast of characters and has been there since the beginning, it isn’t known what kind of adventures the wise-cracking four-legged animals will get up to. Perhaps something relating to his Dragon wife and their children? Who knows? It’s too early to tell.
Some may see this as Universal trying to get as much money as they can out of their acquisition of the popular animation studio. While 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was very successful, films such as Ruby Gillman were outright box office bombs. Perhaps Universal thinks the best way to guarantee a profit is to do sequels and spin-offs.
What do you think? Are you excited to see Shrek and the gang all return after all these years? What do you think about them doing a solo Donkey movie? Will it be any good, or will it crash and burn like Dragon’s fire? Let us know your thoughts.
