What is Star Wars Funday Football?
A real-time cartoon version of the Super Bowl. Every play of the game will be recreated live, with the players turned into animated avatars, according to StarWars.com.
Star Wars characters will “sub in” during key moments, and fans can look for Easter eggs throughout the game. Lucasfilm says more details on settings, commentators and characters are coming.
Who is in the Star Wars Super Bowl teaser?
C-3PO and R2-D2. A teaser released Tuesday, Oct. 20, shows the droids crash-landing on a desert planet on their way to a far-off stadium.
Anthony Daniels, who has played C-3PO since the original 1977 film, returns to voice the droid.
How does the animated Super Bowl work?
It uses live data from the field. The telecast is produced with technology from Sony’s Beyond Sports, which turns real gameplay into animation in real time.
It combines player tracking data from the NFL’s Next Gen Stats with Hawk-Eye optical tracking, so the cartoon players move just like the real ones.
Where can you watch the regular Super Bowl LXI broadcast?
On ESPN, ABC and Disney+. Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Lisa Salters and Laura Rutledge will call the game from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, according to StarWars.com.
It’s ESPN’s first-ever Super Bowl production, and the Star Wars version will run alongside it.
Who is playing in Super Bowl LXI?
Nobody knows yet. The NFL season is still underway, and the two teams will be decided in the conference championship games a couple of weeks before the Super Bowl.
Whoever makes it, their players will show up as animated avatars in the Star Wars version, with familiar characters joining the action.
Can you watch Star Wars Funday Football outside the U.S.?
In many places, yes. It will stream live in markets including Canada (on TSN+), Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
It will also be available on demand on Disney+ shortly after the game in more regions, including the United Kingdom, France and Germany. In all, it will reach more than 155 markets.
Has ESPN done animated NFL games before?
Yes. This is the fourth animated NFL alternate telecast from ESPN, Disney and the NFL, and the first ever for a Super Bowl.
The Funday Football series started with Toy Story Funday Football in 2023, which won a Sports Emmy. It was followed by The Simpsons Funday Football in 2024 and Monsters Funday Football.
Why Star Wars for the Super Bowl?
It’s a big anniversary year. Lucasfilm is celebrating 50 years of Star Wars in 2027.
The original 1977 Star Wars returns to theaters on Friday, Feb. 19, just days after the Super Bowl, including its first-ever IMAX 70mm presentation at select locations.
What else is coming for Star Wars’ 50th anniversary?
A lot. Star Wars Celebration runs April 1-4 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, according to StarWars.com.
Then Star Wars: Starfighter, the new movie starring Ryan Gosling, opens in theaters on May 28, the 50th anniversary weekend of the original film’s premiere.
