Disney Announces Galaxy’s Edge ‘Rise of the Resistance’ Opening Dates

I’m sure by now a lot of you have heard the news about how the crowds are very low at Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Which is GREAT news if you are going there right now!

The Disney Parks Parks Blog has announced when we can expect the second attraction, Rise of the Resistance, to open at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts.

As it turns out Walt Disney World’s will open first.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open in Walt Disney World on August 29. It will open without the Rise of the Resistance attraction. But, the attraction will open later this year, on December 5th, Walt Disney’s Birthday.

The Disneyland version will open on January 17, 2020.

This is all interesting to us. Initially Disney was going to open Galaxy’s Edge in Walt Disney World “late fall 2019” which would have put it all opening around the date for Rise of the Resistance. But then people weren’t booking trips until they knew when Galaxy’s Edge would open and Disney really wanted to get trips on the books for 2019. Their fiscal year for 2019 ends the last day of September, hence the earlier, incomplete openings.

December is also when Star Wars Episode IX opens. Since the new attraction is based on Disney’s Star Wars sequel films, they are going to use this for their “brand synergy” that they go on and on about.

Honestly, I am pretty sure Walt Disney World’s Galaxy’s Edge is going to be a lot busier than Disneyland’s was. Disney is going to make SURE of it as they are facing a PR nightmare with the low crowds on the west coast.

I also think this is the reason for opening the Rise of the Resistance attraction at Walt Disney World first. It won’t look like it’s under performing with larger crowds.

For those of you that wanted to wait for the full experience (I’m with you there) you can now book with a date in mind. I’m sure there are and will be some great deals coming to get people in because Disney does not want a repeat of what happened in Disneyland. So keep an eye out for that!
