Theme Park Giants Six Flags & Cedar Fair Complete Merger

After decades of intense rivalry in the North American amusement part industry two of the biggest names in the business, Cedar Fair and Six Flags, have officially merged, becoming the largest North American theme park entity.

A statement via the Six Flags investors page read:

We are thrilled to announce that Cedar Fair Entertainment Company and Six Flags Entertainment Corporation completed their merger on July 1, 2024, creating the largest and most diverse amusement park operator in North America. Our combined company now operates under the Six Flags name and trades under the ticker symbol FUN on the NYSE.

Six Flags, founded in 1961, and Cedar Fair, founded in 1983, will now be combined into a new Six Flags Entertainment Corporation. The company will have 42 locations across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The deal is said to be worth $8 Billion.

Richard Zimmerman, former President and CEO of Cedar Fair, will operate as the President and CEO of this new entity while Selim Bassoul, former President and CEO of Six Flags, will become the Chairman of the board of directors.

While Disney and Universal Studios tend to hold the “A Tier” amusement parks, Cedar Fair and Six Flags have been the kings of “B Tier” experiences. They focus on thrill rides and water parks, and many of their parks offer experiences unique to their geographical and cultural locations. While not a big-budget Hollywood-style park experience, you were still getting your money’s worth.

With a merger like this, there will potentially be some cuts to avoid redundancy. While not confirmed, there has been some speculation about possible locations that could either be sold off or closed due to the increased operating costs. It is known that Disney has had its eye on Knott’s Berry Farms for years. We will have to wait and see what happens.

What do you think? Is this merger good for the overall amusement park-going experience? Or do you believe the lack of competition will stagnate innovation? Will any locations be sold off or closed? Let us know your thoughts.
