While both Marvel and Lucasfilm are having various issues regarding their lineup of films in the sci-fi and action genre, Disney’s other big subsidiary, 20th Century Studios, is actually doing rather well in that regard. Just recently, Alien: Romulus brought in over $350 million against an $80 million budget, and Avatar: The Way of Water became the third highest-grossing movie of all time.
One of the studios’ other legacy franchises, Planet of the Apes, had a new film release this past summer. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes brought in close to $397.4 million against a $160 million budget. While not a runaway success, the film still did fairly well.
The film was the first released under Disney’s ownership and the first in a new trilogy meant to be the fourth in a nine-film saga. The creative team stated that they had plans for a trilogy of trilogies, which began early on in the rebooted continuity. Whether or not they get to tell the whole story depends on whether the films continue to do well.
Well, apparently, we may have a release date for the next movie, which would continue the story of the young ape Noa as he leads his tribe into a future where humans still struggle to hold onto their humanity and where a divide between the two species may ignite a new conflict.
In an interview with Steve Asbell, the president of production at 20th Century Studios, he was asked about the studios’ balance between established franchises and original ideas. He stated:
“Right now it’s looking like next year, half the slate. Job one was figuring out these franchise movies first and coming up with the right cadence of Avatar, Apes, Alien and Predator specifically. Getting those right was the first part, which we’ve done now. And so that idea is to be able to say, ‘Okay, we know when the Avatar movies are coming. We know now about Predator. There’ll be another Apes in ‘27, let’s just say.’ So knowing where we can plan those franchises, it helps us look to see and ask what kinds of original movies in terms of genre do we want to test the marketplace with?“
If Asbell’s prediction is true, we could possibly see another entry in the series in 2027, just in time for the franchise’s 60th anniversary. Only time will tell if this will actually happen.
What do you think? Will we get a new Planet of the Apes movie in 2027? Or will it be pushed back? Let us know your thoughts.
