Taco Bell’s first hot dog debuted, but only at a golf tournament

The Fire Pina Hot Dog came on a chalupa flatbread with pineapple and cotija, and Taco Bell served it only to spectators at its Nov. 2 Live Mas Open in Laguna Beach, Calif.

Taco Bell made a hot dog. Unless you were on a golf course in Laguna Beach, Calif., on Nov. 2, you didn’t get one.

The Fire Pina Hot Dog debuted at Taco Bell’s first Live Mas Open, a celebrity golf tournament hosted by Kevin Hart, Allrecipes reported Thursday. Writer Bailey Fink tried it as a spectator and called it Taco Bell’s first-ever hot dog.

Here’s the build, per Fink: a hot dog served on Taco Bell’s chalupa flatbread instead of a bun, topped with pineapple, pickled red onion, cotija cheese and sauces. She couldn’t pin down the sauces. Her guess was a take on salsa rosada, or sour cream plus Fire Sauce.

Her verdict? “Honestly, perfection.” She called it “easily one of the best hot dogs I’ve ever had” from a fast-food chain.

Now the catch. There’s no price, because it isn’t for sale. This isn’t a national launch or a test market. Taco Bell served the hot dog and the rest of its event menu only at the tournament, and it has no plans to put those items on menus right now, Allrecipes reported.

Taco Bell hasn’t posted anything about the hot dog on its own newsroom.

Here’s a look at Taco Bell’s Live Mas Open:

Where did Taco Bell serve the Fire Pina Hot Dog?

At an on-course Taco Bell drive-thru at The Ranch at Laguna Beach in Orange County. Taco Bell announced the one-day, nine-hole tournament on Sept. 10 and promised golf-inspired food that remixed country club favorites.

Golf Digest reported that teams took on wild-card challenges between shots and stopped at the drive-thru on the course. Ludacris performed at the afterparty. You know, regular golf stuff.

The hot dog had company. Allrecipes listed the rest of the exclusive lineup:

  • Baja Caesar Crispy Chicken Crunchwrap

  • Fiesta Potato Salad

  • Pimento Quesarito

  • Avalanche Taco

  • Lemon Pepper Ranch Dusted Crispy Chicken Nuggets

Pimento cheese and potato salad at a Taco Bell drive-thru. The country club potluck took a wrong turn, and honestly, good for it.

When can you watch the Live Mas Open?

The tournament premieres Nov. 20 on Peacock, according to Golf Digest and Allrecipes.

The field had 36 players in nine foursomes. Each team paired a celebrity, a pro athlete, a content creator and one fan who qualified through a Topgolf contest in September. A live draft set the teams on the day of the event.

“I love golf, I love Taco Bell,” Hart said in Taco Bell’s announcement.

Fans who wanted a spot had to be 21 or older. They qualified by playing a Topgolf game called Shot Shuffle or entering online, and Taco Bell picked nine winners from 100 randomly drawn finalists.

What menu item is Taco Bell bringing back?

That’s the real prize. The winning foursome gets a trophy, purple jackets and the power to pick a discontinued item to return for a limited time at participating U.S. Taco Bell locations in 2027.

Taco Bell hasn’t named the item. Golf Digest reported that the Peacock premiere will reveal which discontinued favorite is coming back. So the result is still under wraps, and nobody has said a hot dog was on the ballot.

Has Taco Bell ever sold hot dogs?

Allrecipes billed the Fire Pina as Taco Bell’s first hot dog. The family tree makes it more of a homecoming.

Founder Glen Bell opened Bell’s Drive-In in San Bernardino, Calif., in 1948. It first sold hamburgers and hot dogs, and he added Mexican food later, QSR Magazine reported.

The first Taco Bell opened in Downey, Calif., in 1962, on Firestone Boulevard.

Fink also mentioned the Bell Beefer, a hamburger that once sat on Taco Bell’s national menu. So the chain has wandered outside the taco lane before.

Will Taco Bell put the hot dog on its menu?

Not for now. Fink wrote that she wouldn’t rule out a future launch if fans show enough interest, but Taco Bell hasn’t said anything about it.

Until then, the closest most of us will get to the Fire Pina Hot Dog is watching celebrities eat it on Peacock on Nov. 20. Pineapple on a hot dog stays a debate for another day.
