80s kids, get ready! Rainbow Brite is returning soon! Crayola Studios and Hallmark are joining forces to revive the iconic IP for it’s 40th anniversary!
Crayola Studios will handle the merchandise and licensing.
Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher, the team behind Sonic the Hedgehog, are producing the film. Cake Entertainment is creating a television series focusing on “friendship, teamwork, and the power of color and optimism to overcome darkness and negativity.”
The animation looks like 3D animation.

Sabrina Wiewel, EVP, chief culture strategy Hallmark, said,
“In this milestone year for Rainbow Brite we are thrilled to be working with Crayola Studios, Cake and Original Film on this vivid reimagining of the beloved brand. It has proved its appeal over the past 40 years and we can’t wait to strengthen connections with loyal fans and introduce a new generation to the dazzling world of color and imagination.”
Hallmark Cards introduced Rainbow Brite in 1984. The dolls were incredibly popular, and I adored them.
The animated show also started in 1984, and Warner Bros. released the film Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer in 1985.
I am really excited to see this. However, I am concerned about them saying the new version will have a “contemporary appeal.” We keep seeing “modern audiences” with reboots, and it ends in disaster.
Let’s hope it’s great.
