Monstober: the history of Disney Channel’s Halloween month

Disney Channel’s Monstober goes back to at least 2012, when Girl vs. Monster premiered during it. It got renamed, came back in 2024, and Disney+ has gone through three Halloween names of its own.

Disney Channel has a name for October. It’s Monstober.

The earliest Disney press release we could find using it is from 2012, when Disney Channel premiered “Girl vs. Monster” on Oct. 12 “during the Monstober programming event.” The name has come and gone since, and Disney+ has run through its own string of Halloween brands.

We went only by Disney’s own announcements for this one.

When did Monstober start on Disney Channel?

At least by 2012.

That year’s “Girl vs. Monster” press release, posted by The Futon Critic, set the movie’s premiere during Monstober. It also promised a “Monstober Night of Premieres” hosted by the movie’s cast and a “Monstober Movie Marathon” hosted by star Olivia Holt.

We couldn’t find an official use of the name before that. Fan uploads of 2011 promos exist, but nothing from Disney itself, so 2012 is the safe bet.

What was on Monstober in 2014 and 2016?

By 2014, D23 was calling Monstober “Disney Channel’s annual programming event.” That year’s hosts were Raini Rodriguez and Calum Worthy, from “Austin & Ally,” D23 reported.

In 2016, Monstober kicked off Oct. 1, according to the trade site World Screen. Its lineup included a new Disney Channel movie, “The Swap,” and a Halloween episode of “Descendants: Wicked World.”

Did Disney Channel stop calling it Monstober?

For a while, yes.

Disney’s 2020 Halloween press release didn’t use an event name for Disney Channel at all. Disney Junior went with “Mickey’s Trick or Treats.”

In 2022, Disney Channel’s Halloween run was called “Calling All The Monsters,” from Sept. 25 to Oct. 31, according to Disney’s press site. That one brought the premiere of “Under Wraps 2.”

When did Monstober come back?

In 2024.

Disney’s 2024 release called Disney Channel’s Monstober “the destination for Halloween content across linear and YouTube.” It came with a “Kiff” Halloween special, the stop-motion short “Wickedly Sweet: A Descendants Short Story” and the premiere of “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.”

Disney’s 2025 October programming release didn’t use the Monstober name, and we didn’t find a 2026 Monstober announcement either. So for now, 2024 is the last official Monstober we can point to.

Here’s Disney Channel’s official Monstober sizzle reel:

What is Disney+ calling Halloween this year?

Huluween.

Disney+ points viewers to a “Huluween on Disney+ 2026 Watch Guide,” its own guide shows. That’s the latest in a string of names:

  • Hallowstream: Disney+ called its 2021 lineup the “second annual” Hallowstream, and 2022 the “third annual,” according to Disney+ press releases.

  • “Halloween on Disney+”: The 2024 branding, when Hallowstream became a continuous stream on the app.

  • “Huluween on Disney+”: Used in 2025 and again this year, after Hulu’s own long-running Huluween brand.

Which Disney Channel Halloween movies premiered in October?

A lot of them. Here are the October premieres, according to D23:

  • “Under Wraps”: Oct. 25, 1997

  • “Halloweentown”: Oct. 17, 1998

  • “Halloweentown II”: Oct. 12, 2001

  • “Halloweentown High”: Oct. 8, 2004

  • “Twitches”: Oct. 14, 2005

  • “Return to Halloweentown”: Oct. 20, 2006

  • “Twitches Too”: Oct. 12, 2007

  • “Girl vs. Monster”: Oct. 12, 2012

The “Under Wraps” remake premiered on Disney Channel on Oct. 1, 2021, according to Disney.

What Disney Halloween specials are new in 2026?

“Vampirina: Teenage Vampire” Season 2 premiered Oct. 6 on Disney Channel, with the full season on Disney+ the next day, Disney announced.

Disney+ also added Halloween specials from “Big City Greens,” “Kiff” and “Phineas and Ferb” on Oct. 7, according to Disney’s October 2026 schedule.

What are some fun facts about Disney Channel Halloween?

Disney Channel is older than you think. It started broadcasting April 18, 1983, according to D23.

There was a Halloween House Party. “Disney Channel Halloween House Party,” hosted by Tobie Windham, premiered Oct. 16, 2020, D23 says.

Monstober went online, too. By 2024, Disney pitched it as a YouTube destination as much as a TV block.

Whatever Disney calls it next year, October is still the month the channel gets weird on purpose.
