The WEBTOON-built Marvel Comics app costs $9.99 a month, or $12.49 for new issues 30 days after print, and Marvel Unlimited members have until Dec. 7 to move their libraries over.
Marvel Unlimited is going away.
Marvel stopped taking new sign-ups for its digital comics subscription on Monday, Oct. 5. Its replacement, the Marvel Comics app, launches Monday, Nov. 16, on phones and the web.
The new app is built and run by WEBTOON Entertainment, the company behind the WEBTOON vertical-scroll comics app. Marvel says it holds more than 35,000 digital comics.
How much does the Marvel Comics app cost?
There are two tiers, and both are plus tax:
-
Base: $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year
-
Ultimate: $12.49 a month or $99.99 a year
The yearly plans are the better deal. Twelve months of Base at the monthly price comes to $119.88, and twelve months of Ultimate comes to $149.88. Paying for the year saves you about $50 either way.
There’s also a founding member offer. If you pre-register, the first year of Ultimate annual drops to $59.99, which is $40 off.
How soon can you read new Marvel comics on the app?
That’s the real difference between the two tiers.
Base gets new comics three months after they come out in print. Ultimate gets them as soon as 30 days after.
So the extra $2.50 a month is basically buying you two months.
What happens to Marvel Unlimited and your library?
Marvel laid out four dates:
-
Around Nov. 16: active subscribers get an automatic, prorated refund for their unused time
-
Dec. 7: comics stop being readable on Marvel Unlimited
-
Dec. 21: last day to browse your old library and make sure it moved over
-
Dec. 28: the Marvel Unlimited app shuts down for good
Dec. 7 is the date that matters. Marvel says to import your library into the new app before then, so you can check that it came through.
That gives you exactly three weeks after the new app launches.
There’s one more catch. Your Marvel Unlimited payment info won’t be shared with WEBTOON, so you’ll need a new WEBTOON account and a new subscription.
The good news: Marvel says Unlimited members keep their library access free of charge until Dec. 7.
What comics are in the Marvel Comics app?
Marvel says the library covers Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century Studios comics. You can read them page by page or in the vertical-scroll style WEBTOON is known for.
“We know that there is a large audience of readers who are looking to experience comics digitally, and there is no richer library than Marvel Comics,” said David Abdo, general manager of Marvel Comics and Franchise.
Disney fans might catch one small gap. When Disney took a 2 percent stake in WEBTOON Entertainment last year, the plan named Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, Pixar and 20th Century Studios comics.
The Oct. 5 announcement lists Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century Studios. Marvel hasn’t said whether Disney and Pixar comics are in at launch.
Where can you try the Marvel Comics app early?
At New York Comic Con, Oct. 8 to 11. Marvel will have a booth, No. 2435, where fans can try a beta version of the app and pre-register.
Will Marvel still sell print comics?
Yes. Marvel says its print schedule isn’t changing, with new comics still coming out every Wednesday.
So the shop on the corner is fine. It’s your digital library that has a moving date.
