Hulu On “Life Support” and Will Be Absorbed Into Disney+ According to Leaked Documents

We already knew that Hulu now appears on Disney+, but many still use the app as a stand-alone service.  It seems Hulu may soon be completely absorbed by Disney+, according to documents seen by Business Insider.

The plan to merge the two services is apparently called “Project Gemini.” This quote was from within the document.

“The Hulu tech stack and app will be decommissioned after all users have transitioned”.

How soon could this all happen?

It could be fully integrated as early as late 2026.

As the Hulu app heads toward decommissioning, this will likely mean no development or low upkeep, according to a veteran streaming employee at Hulu.

“Hulu is on life support at this point, with no active development.”

Disney says they have no plans to end the Hulu app, but if this document is true, they might not be telling the whole truth.

It does make more sense to roll it into Disney+

Disney really doesn’t need two stand-alone apps, so it makes sense to combine it all into one location. By doing so, it might give them more leverage with advertisers.

It could also lead to layoffs because combining all into one would create redundancies. If Hulu is sunset, expect even more layoffs.

D’Amaro keeps pushing for “One Disney.”

This is all in line with new Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro’s plans to make one “super app” to do everything regarding Disney. Book trips, watch movies, buy merchandise, visit the parks, use streaming, etc.

With each consolidation of apps or sites comes more staff overlap and layoffs.

One app gives Disney more control and leverage.

Can’t wait for the inevitable price hikes.  Force for “convenience” then charge more for the “convenience.”  That is the Disney way.

Expect more subtle pushes for users to move over to Disney+, and when that doesn’t work, maybe Hulu will have more issues, bugs, and other problems to further entice customers to jump to Hulu on Disney+.
