How much is Target’s Thanksgiving meal? $30 feeds six this year

Target’s meal deal runs Nov. 8 to 29 with a Butterball turkey and eight sides. BJ’s is giving away free turkeys, too. Here’s how both stack up against Aldi, Sam’s Club and Publix.

Thanksgiving dinner for six, for about what a takeout order costs.

Target announced a $30 Thanksgiving meal that feeds six people on Thursday, Oct. 22. That works out to $5 a person, the same per-person price as last year’s meal, Target said.

The prices are good from Nov. 8 through Nov. 29, before tax. The deal isn’t available in Alaska or Hawaii.

Here’s what’s in the bag, plus a free turkey offer from BJ’s and how the big grocery deals compare.

What comes in Target’s $30 Thanksgiving meal?

Nine items, according to Target’s announcement:

  • A Butterball Premium Whole Young Turkey, up to 10 pounds.

  • A 3-pound bag of Good & Gather russet potatoes.

  • Ocean Spray jellied cranberry sauce, 14 ounces.

  • Two 14.5-ounce cans of Del Monte French style green beans.

  • Campbell’s condensed cream of mushroom soup, 10.5 ounces.

  • Good & Gather French fried onions, 6 ounces.

  • Stove Top stuffing mix for turkey, 6 ounces.

  • Heinz homestyle turkey gravy, 12 ounces.

  • Two Favorite Day take and bake baguettes.

So yes, that’s everything for a green bean casserole. You’ll need your own butter and milk for the potatoes.

Does Target have cheap turkeys this year?

It does. Target’s own Good & Gather frozen turkey will be 79 cents a pound starting in November, wherever it’s sold. It’s the third year in a row at that price, Target said.

What else is Target selling for Thanksgiving?

A lot of $5 add-ons. Target has an expanded lineup of $5 sides, pies, appetizers and wine, with limited-time prices from Nov. 8 to 29.

The sides include Good & Gather mashed sweet potatoes and Parmesan cheese topped roasted vegetables. Favorite Day pies come in new sizes and flavors, including Apple Caramel Crumb.

There are also more than 10 new Good & Gather frozen appetizers. Two of them are Blueberry and Brie Cheese Sticks and Feta Cheese and Honey Cheese Bites.

In all, Target says it’s adding nearly 60 new food and drink items for the season. That includes a Kinder’s brine kit, Magnolia Table biscuits and a Good & Gather warm apple cider smoked ham.

Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving are “such joyful moments for our guests,” said John Conlin, Target’s senior vice president of food and beverage merchandising.

How do you get a free turkey at BJ’s?

Spend $150 in one trip. BJ’s Wholesale Club is bringing back its annual turkey giveaway from Oct. 31 to Nov. 9, Sporked reported.

Hit the minimum and you get a coupon for a free fresh or frozen Butterball turkey. You redeem it from Nov. 14 to 25.

There are some catches:

  • The coupon is worth up to $25.

  • Organic turkeys don’t count.

  • You have to be a BJ’s member.

  • Based on past years, things like alcohol, tobacco and gift cards probably won’t count toward the $150.

BJ’s says supplies are limited. Sporked quoted one Reddit user who spent almost $400 at BJ’s last year, then came back the Friday before Thanksgiving to find the turkeys gone.

How does Target compare with Aldi, Sam’s Club and Publix?

Target sits near the bottom on price but covers the basics.

  • Aldi says its meal feeds 10 for under $39, as PNP reported Oct. 16. That’s about $3.90 a person, and it includes pumpkin pie ingredients.

  • Sam’s Club has a 16-person Member’s Mark meal for just under $160. It adds a ham and a charcuterie tray, and it’s built for a crowd.

  • Publix cooked turkey dinners start at $69.99 for about eight people, with online orders opening Tuesday, Oct. 27, PNP reported Friday.

Sporked put Target closer to Aldi, calling it a fit for smaller groups who want a good plate without overspending.

When should you buy your Thanksgiving turkey?

Sooner than you think. Frozen turkeys tend to go faster than fresh ones at BJ’s, Sporked noted.

Target’s meal deal doesn’t start until Nov. 8, so there’s time. But if you’re counting on a BJ’s coupon, plan that $150 run for early in the window.

Either way, Thanksgiving is Nov. 26. The turkey’s going to take longer to thaw than you think.
