A week-long countdown on Alex Hirsch’s Gravity Falls puzzle site ended Friday with a new page of codes and cut content. Fans read a Stan spinoff into it. Hirsch says ease up.
The Gravity Falls website is back to messing with people, and its creator would like everyone to calm down.
Late Friday, thisisnotawebsitedotcom.com, the puzzle site Alex Hirsch built to go with The Book of Bill, unlocked a new section after a week of countdown clues. By Saturday, fan accounts on X were calling it a “new website” and floating a spinoff starring Stanley and Stanford Pines.
Hirsch replied at 2:49 a.m. ET Sunday in a post on X: “An accurate headline would read ‘new website makes jokes.’ I like clicks as much as the next person but like, can you ease up with making definitive declarations about vague playful gags?”
The post had passed 103,000 views by Sunday morning.
What is the Gravity Falls website?
A two-year-old puzzle box, not a new launch.
Thisisnotawebsitedotcom.com went live on July 23, 2024, alongside The Book of Bill, Hirsch’s in-character book written by the show’s villain, Bill Cipher. The site’s address was printed on page 16 of the book, and the first password was hidden in one of the book’s puzzles, per the Gravity Falls Wiki.
Since then it’s worked like an old computer terminal. You type codes, and it answers with jokes, cut art, audio and the occasional bit of lore. Fans have documented hundreds of them.
What changed on the Gravity Falls website this week?
A countdown, then a new page called “BACKSTAGE.”
The trail started with The Art of Gravity Falls, the art book released Sept. 15. It contained ciphers pointing back at the site, including “LISTEN TO THE STATIC,” per the wiki.
On Sept. 22, Hirsch posted a video of a static-filled screen to his Instagram story and deleted it within hours. That same day, the site’s dial, which had always played static, started saying “FIVE.” Then “FOUR” that night. It counted down one number a day.
At 5 p.m. PT on Sept. 26, the audio changed to “BACKSTAGE,” played backward. Typing that word unlocks a page of new codes and content about the show’s production history, including a scrapped opening sequence, per ToonHive.
That’s the “new website.” It’s a new room in the old one.
Is there a Gravity Falls spinoff about Stan and Ford?
The only thing announced is a set of coordinates, and Hirsch is telling people to stop assuming.
The spinoff talk comes from a few of the new codes. Typing “SPINOFF,” “GRUNKLES AT SEA” or “STANOWAR” produces a set of coordinates, per ToonHive. The site also cracks jokes if you type “SEASON 3” or “MOVIE,” and one gag has Caine from The Amazing Digital Circus fighting Bill for Grunkle Stan’s affection.
Coordinates and a punchline are a long way from a greenlight. Hirsch has spent two years using this site to troll the exact fans who are now reading tea leaves in it.
Fans in the replies to ToonHive’s post were split. “I definitely hope so! I’ve been wanting a Sea Grunks spin-off series for ages!” one wrote. Another: “I know these tricks, I will not be fooled by hope yet again.”
Will there be more Gravity Falls?
The show ended in 2016 after two seasons, on purpose. Hirsch has said many times that he told the whole story he wanted to tell.
What has kept coming is everything around it. The Book of Bill in 2024, The Art of Gravity Falls this month, and a site that turns each book into a scavenger hunt. Hirsch also has an overall deal at Netflix, which is where fans expect his next original series to land.
Disney still owns Gravity Falls. Any spinoff would be Disney’s call, and Disney hasn’t said a word.
For now, the terminal is open and the codes are live. Type carefully. It’s watching.
