Walt Disney Animation’s Hexed is reportedly tracking for a $35 million to $45 million three-day opening and up to $70 million over five days when it opens Nov. 25, according to Boxoffice Pro.
Disney’s next animated movie is tracking to hit mid levels at opening. It’s still projected to do far better than Wish.
Hexed is projected to open to $35 million to $45 million over its first three days and $50 million to $70 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday, according to a long-range forecast from Boxoffice Pro released Friday, Oct. 30.
The Walt Disney Animation Studios film opens in theaters Wednesday, Nov. 25.
How much will Hexed make opening weekend?
$35 million to $45 million for the Friday-to-Sunday weekend, Boxoffice Pro said. Counting Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day, the five-day total could reach $50 million to $70 million.
That would put Hexed in position to lead the holiday weekend box office, according to the forecast.
But it is important to note that many films have estimates that far exceeded reality when a film was released.
How does Hexed compare to Moana 2 and Zootopia 2?
It’s tracking well below both. Disney’s last two Thanksgiving releases were huge sequels that each opened above $100 million over three days, Boxoffice Pro said.
Those sequels had built-in fans of all ages, which made those holiday weekends the two biggest Thanksgiving frames ever. Hexed is an original story, so it doesn’t have that head start.
Is Hexed doing better than other original Disney movies?
Yes. Hexed is tracking ahead of Disney’s last three original animated Thanksgiving releases, according to Boxoffice Pro. Here are Disney’s last five animated Thanksgiving openings, over three days:
-
Encanto (2021): $27.2 million
-
Strange World (2022): $12.1 million
-
Wish (2023): $19.6 million
-
Moana 2 (2024): $139.7 million
-
Zootopia 2 (2025): $100.2 million
Encanto is the one to beat, Boxoffice Pro said. It opened modestly but kept selling tickets for weeks and finished with $96 million in the U.S.
What would a $70 million five-day opening mean for Hexed?
A strong start for an original. Even at the low end of its range, Hexed would beat the five-day openings of Encanto ($40.5 million), Wish ($31.6 million) and Strange World ($18.8 million), based on Boxoffice Pro’s numbers.
It would still trail Moana 2 ($225.4 million) and Zootopia 2 ($158.8 million) by a wide margin. Word of mouth over the holiday break could help Hexed keep selling tickets into December, just like Encanto did.
What is Hexed about?
An impulsive teenager named Billie Doe gets expelled from school and discovers she has secret magical powers. She’s pulled from the suburbs into Hexe, a world of witches, where she teams up with her cautious mom, Alice, to uncover family secrets, according to Disney.
Who is in the Hexed voice cast?
Hailee Steinfeld voices Billie, and Rashida Jones voices her mom, Alice. Jodie Foster plays the villainous Queen Celeste, and Walton Goggins voices Beef Roger, a three-eyed cat, according to Bleeding Cool.
The cast also includes Henry Winkler, Dan Stevens, Tracey Ullman and Stephen Fry.
Is there a Hexed trailer?
Yes. Walt Disney Animation Studios released the official trailer in October.
Is there a short before Hexed?
Yes. The new Lilo & Stitch short Lilo & Scratch will play before Hexed in theaters, according to Wikipedia’s production listing.
How long is Hexed?
About 103 minutes, according to early listings.
