It seems Disney has just won a bidding war for the rights to make a new “Casper” show for Disney+. If you are expecting “Casper the friendly ghost” as you remember, think again. Reports indicate that Disney wants to make the show darker and edgier like “Wednesday.” But hey, Christina Ricci appeared in both franchises, so maybe they can get her for this one too.
Disney simply wants to find ways to cash in on trends that other streamers and studios have already done.
They wanted their own “Harry Potter,” so they paid massive money for the rights to the “Impossible Creatures” series of books.
Now they want their own “Wednesday,” and here they are grabbing up “Casper” of all things.
What are they going to do with Casper?
The rumor from Deadline is that they are going to try to make it the new “Wednesday”.
“There are no details yet about the new Casper, described as a modern update on the classic ghost story, which is in the early stages of development. It is believed to have a dark edge to it the way Wednesday tackles the Addams Family lore.”
Don’t you want to see the new “hot” Casper go to high school? Oh no, please don’t be an aged-up “Casper’s Scare School” show.
It could end up like a gender-swapped Monster High with a vampire friend (Thatch), a mummy friend (Ra), and a zombie friend (Mantha.) If they add Wendy she can be his witch friend.
Don’t worry, Steven Spielberg is involved.
Spielberg did the movie in 1995 with Christina Ricci, and he is executive producing this one along with Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston (Disney+ Goosebumps). Letterman and Winston will also write the show, which will be directed by Letterman.
Now Casper will enter purgatory, also known as development
Disney has the rights, but the show will need to go through development before it can be greenlit and approved for Disney+ release. It still has a long way to go to be the next “Wednesday” or CW show.
This could be amazing or very bad. I don’t think there is room in between.
