Disney/ Pixar’s ‘Onward’ Releasing Digitally Today and on Disney+ on April 3rd

Well this is going to get interesting.

Onward is going to release digitally today, March 20th, at 8PM EDT and 5PM PDT and it will release on Disney+ April 3rd.

The film opened in theaters two weeks ago, on March 6th. Since theaters have closed down over mandatory shut-downs, Disney is taking the film directly to Digital.  But only for two weeks and then it will hit Disney+.

‘Onward’ director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae gave this statement via a press release:

While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes.

Well at least we now have this to look forward to. At first I thought it was odd to release it on digital and then on Disney+ two weeks later. People will just wait for Disney+, but when you think about it, it’s very smart. They were starting to flatline on Disney+ subscriptions and with people not able to work, and money being tight, offering it on Disney+ is a great way to gain subscribers, reach more people, and improve how people feel about Disney.

It makes sense. However, I really do worry about how movie theaters are going to fare in all of this, and I wonder how much different the world will be when we come out of it.
