The list of controversies surrounding the upcoming Live-Action Remake of Disney’s 1937 animated classic Snow White keeps growing. Casting issues, replacing the dwarfs with more “diverse” characters, altering key elements of the story that were “problematic,” and the various “hot takes” from lead actress Rachel Zegler herself.
The negative aura this film has accumulated has people wondering if Disney will cancel the film, which is highly unlikely due to how much money they have already sunken into it. But now an even bigger metaphorical slap in the face to the film has been made as conservative media company, The Daily Wire, has announced their own version of “Snow White” for the same year.
The film is titled Snow White and the Evil Queen and stars YouTube commentator Brett Cooper. Not much is known about the plot or who else has been cast. We can only assume that it will try to stick close to the original public domain fairy tale as certain elements from the 1937 film (such as the dwarf names and character traits) are wholly owned by Disney themselves.
The film is set for a 2024 release (no specific date yet) on Daily Wire’s new children’s media app Bentkey, which is marketed as being dedicated to more “traditional” children’s entertainment. In early 2022, Daily Wire announced that it would invest $100 Million in children’s entertainment. It is currently unknown if this film is part of that initial investment.
The film is clearly a response to Disney’s version. While it isn’t out of the ordinary that other companies make direct-to-video or direct-to-streaming films to try and capitalize off of larger Hollywood productions (The Asylum for example) this is clearly made to spite Disney’s upcoming remake.
It is too early to tell which version will be better since neither has shown much of what theirs has to offer. We have to wait until next year to see which one will come out on top in this epic showdown. Put down your tiaras, ladies. The silk gloves are coming off.
