Zootopia 2 Winning In China With Largest Opening Day For US Animated Movie!

‘Zootopia 2’ has been released in theaters this week. Disney, Hollywood, and the movie theater chains have been anxiously awaiting its debut, hoping for a box office turnaround. One of the countries everyone was watching is China. Lately, American films haven’t fared as well as they have in the past, but the “Zootopia” and the “Avatar” franchises are popular over there.

It seems that China is going for “Zootopia 2”!

The film has reached both the biggest opening day and the highest single-day total for a U.S. animated film in China.  Opening about $34 M.

According to Deadline, this is also the best launch day for a “studio movie since May 2021) and the “10th best for Hollywood of all time.”

To put this in perspective, here are some totals for recent US “tentpoles” in China.
  • “Tron: Ares” made about $5M for its entire run.
  • “Fantastic Four: First Steps” about $5.6M for the entire run.
  • “Superman” – $8.9M.
  • “Lilo and Stitch” – about $25.3M for the entire run in China.
  • “A Minecraft Movie”  – $29.2M for the entire run.
  • “Snow White” – $1.3M for the entire run.

Even ones that did really well, like “Inside Out 2,” which hit $47.4M for the entire run in China, opened far lower at only $10M.  It’s very possible that “Zootopia 2” could be huge in China!

We have CinemaScore, but China has the Maoyan Score.

Audiences have scored “Zootopia 2” a 9.7, which was higher than the first “Zootopia” at 9.5.

“Inside Out 2” was scored a 9.1 for comparison.

A CinemaScore has not yet been issued in the United States, but it should be released any day now.

Maoyan is predicting a $340M box office just in China! Stateside, they are estimating a $125M-$150M opening (five-day), but I would not be surprised if it went higher.

Is “Zootopia 2” good?

Yes. I liked it better than the first one, but my daughter thinks the first one is still better.  We scored it a 8.5-9/10.

This one is worth the trip to see it in theaters!
