‘Zootopia 2’ has crossed $1 billion at the global box office, in just 17 days. This is a record for a PG rated film.
The film earned over $753 million globally (mostly due to China), making “Zootopia 2” the 13th animated film in history to earn $1 billion worldwide.
Critics and audiences alike are loving this film, but the international audience pushed it over the milestone. China alone has pushed almost 1/2 of the billion dollar total themselves, with the film making about $450 million in that country alone.
After China, the United States, and Canada the highest performing markets have included,
- France – About $27.4 million
- South Korea – Almost $26 million
- Germany -About $16.2 million
- Mexico – Almost $19 million
- UK – About $15.6 million
- Japan – Almost $12.5 million
- Italy – About $11.3 million.
- Taiwan – Almost $11 million
Here is the “Zootopia 2” synopsis,
“In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia 2,” detectives Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) find themselves on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down. To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town, where their growing partnership is tested like never before.”
Honestly, I loved this film. I liked it better than the first “Zootopia” (although my daughter disagrees).
Why “Zootopia 2” hit $1 billion so quickly
It’s a very good movie but the lack of competition at the box office gave “Zootopia 2” a big boost. “Wicked For Good” and “Five Nights At Freddy’s 2” were also box office draws but those films skew older, especially “Wicked”.
The next big box office event will likely be “Avatar: Fire and Ash” which will release in one week on December 19, 2025. That film will likely also be driven at the box office by the international market, especially China. It is another film that skews older so “Zootopia 2” has a good chance of increasing their box office through the end of 2025. “Avatar” will likely drive hard into early 2026, giving Disney a much needed boost at the box office.
