Disney’s “Zootopia 2” could break box office records in China. After opening on Friday with an impressive $94 million, the animated sequel is now on track to post a historic Saturday as well. According to box-office sources speaking to TheWrap, Saturday’s total is expected to surpass $100 million, a figure that would top “Avengers: Endgame” for the highest single-day earnings ever achieved by a Hollywood release in China.
The momentum behind “Zootopia 2” is building rapidly. Maoyan, China’s leading entertainment data and ticketing platform, has revised its projections upward multiple times since Friday. The company now forecasts a five-day opening reach of roughly $270 million, a substantial start, even by the country’s blockbuster standards.
Given how much China loved “Zootopia”, it is no surprise that this film is performing so well.
Aiming for Half a Billion — With More Possible
Maoyan’s early long-range view sets $500 million as a conservative floor for the film’s total run in China. Analysts now believe the sequel has a legitimate shot at challenging the $632 million benchmark set by “Avengers: Endgame”—the top-grossing Hollywood film in the Chinese market’s history.
A finish in that range would place “Zootopia 2” among the top ten highest-grossing films ever released in China, domestic or foreign.
Global Stakes for Disney Animation
If those domestic numbers hold, the global picture becomes even more significant. The 2016 original film took in just over $1 billion worldwide. With China alone potentially supplying half that amount for the sequel, the movie could surge well past its predecessor.
Should “Zootopia 2” perform comparably to “Moana 2″ in other international markets, its enormous Chinese turnout gives it an early pathway to challenge the $1.45 billion global haul of “Frozen II”, making it Walt Disney Animation Studios’ highest-grossing title of all time.
“Zootopia 2” is heading for a domestic box office total of $158 million or more for its 5-day opening, which is approximately $100 million behind the “Moana 2” opening last year. Again, 5 days is significantly longer than the normal 3-day opening that most films record. Ultimately, the final box office numbers will be what matters.
