Zootopia 2 Becomes Disney’s Highest-Grossing Animated Film as Global Box Office Beating “Frozen II”

Disney’s “Zootopia 2” has officially crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Disney animated movie ever, mostly due to overseas markets.

The film has reached $1.46 billion with about $333 million domestically and $1.13 billion overseas.

China drove up the global box office

A major reason for “Zootopia 2’s” record-breaking performance is its strong performance in China. The film has already earned more than $500 million in the country, making it one of the biggest Hollywood titles there in years. It was so popular that the film became the highest-grossing non-Chinese animated film within five days of release.

It also hit $1 billion in only 17 days–the fastest PG-rated movie in history to do so.

While it did do relatively well in the North American market, without the overseas strength, it wouldn’t have beaten “Frozen II,” which made $1.45 million six years ago.

What animated films have grossed more?

Currently, “Zootopia 2” is in fourth place, meaning there are three films ahead of it on the charts.

Number 1 is going to be tough to beat and will likely remain there for a while, and that is China’s “Ne Zha 2” at $2.2 billion.  Second and third place are easier to reach for the film with “The Lion King” in third place at $1.56 billion, and “Inside Out 2” at about $1.69 billion.

Given that “Zootopia 2” has been out for weeks, it likely won’t move past the 3rd or 4th place spot.

Disney banks on more sequels or remakes

Due to the success of “Zootopia 2” and “Inside Out 2” in 2024, Disney is banking heavily on more sequels, including “Toy Story 5” and “Frozen 3”, and “Frozen 4”. It looks likely that a “Zootopia 3” will be coming to theaters in the next few years as well.

Let’s face it, Disney needs all the box office wins it can get.
