With the XFL and USFL recently announcing plans to merge the world of spring football seems to be rather uncertain. While the initial plan is to merge before the 2024 season (which is likely to begin next February), the official team lineup, confirmed locations, rule changes, and details over ownership still have not been made public.
What we do know is that there will likely be a new name for the league. Despite some fans wanting the two leagues to act as separate entities like in Major League Baseball with the National League and American League, a new across-the-board brand must be agreed upon.
Previously the USFL (which is owned by Fox Sports) had registered a trademark for the NSFL (National Spring Football League) which could be seen as a possible name. However, the XFL (which is owned by RedBird Capital Partners Dany Garcia and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson)(And is partnered with Disney/ESPN) has filed their own trademark—the UFL (United Football League).
The league had eight franchises throughout its existence. The Florida Tuskers (Orlando, Florida), the Hartford Colonials (Hartford, Connecticut) the Las Vegas Locomotives (Las Vegas, Nevada), the Omaha Nighthawks (Omaha, Nebraska), the Sacramento Mountain Lions (Sacramento, California), the Virginia Destroyers (Virginia Beach, Virginia) the New York Sentinels (New York City, New York) and the California Redwoods (San Fransisco, California).
It is unknown if the trademark is still in use. If so, they may be unable to use it and will have to fall back on the proposed NSFL name. Only time will tell.
What do you think? Will they be able to use the UFL name?
