Actor Will Smith acted extremely unprofessionally during the 94th Academy Awards Ceremony. The moment the actor decided to walk up from his seat and slap comedian Chris Rock across the face over a simple joke immediately overshadowed the entire event.
Shortly after the incident Smith won “Best Actor” for his role in the 2021 biopic King Richard. But his acceptance speech felt ungenuine and left people in the audience divided.
Since the incident nearly everyone on social media called him out for his actions. Longtime fans turned on him, as well as other high profile individuals like Mark Hamill, Jim Carrey, Muireannn O’Connell, Nina Bobrev and Sophia Bush all spoke about against the act. Even Richard Williams himself, the real life individual Smith portrayed, condemned the action.
Since then the actor has published an apology on social media after staying quiet since the incident. Though some feel it’s too little too late. Some even feel that the apology isn’t genuine as the actor was seen at the after party dancing and celebrating with his award.
The Academy has also announced that they plan to take disciplinary actions against the actor. It isn’t yet known what actions those would be, but they may result in either a ban from the award show and perhaps even revoking his award. Though we still have to wait and see what will come of this.
This incident will most likely affect his career going forward. Granted he is a high profile individual and didn’t do something like murder someone. But people remember. And, with this incident having been recorded for all to see across the internet it most likely won’t be forgotten any time soon. Certain people, who may have wanted to work with him, or certain companies, who would have wanted to hire him, may now pass him up.
With more and more evidence showing that this incident was not staged but was indeed real it shows the mentality that a number of Hollywood celebrities have. Thinking they can do whatever they want without fear of repercussion. Just this past week actor Ezra Miller was arrested in Hawaii for multiple instances of assault.
