Another day and another meltdown on the Disney-owned ABC show “The View.” Recently, Whoopi Goldberg was celebrating her 69th birthday on the show, and apparently, the bakery she wanted to order desserts from could not fulfill her order. So she decided to make a point of saying the bakery wouldn’t fulfill her order and made a claim that it could be politically motivated
Here is what Whoopi Goldberg said,
“My birthday dessert today was one of my mom’s favorites from when she was a kid. She talked about these all the time. They’re called Charlotte Russe. It’s a sponge cake with whipped cream and a cherry on top. I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings. The place that made these refused to make them for me.
No, let me explain, They said that their ovens had gone down, but folks went and got them anyway, which is why I’m not telling you who made them. It’s not… because I’m a woman, but perhaps they did not like my politics.“
The bakery, which was later identified as Holtermann’s, has a different version of the story.
According to the owner, Jill Holtermann, Goldberg did try to book an order for the Charlotte Russe desserts, but she didn’t accept the order because they were having an issue with their boiler and weren’t sure she could fulfill the request. Goldberg attempted to book two different dates: November 6, for an appearance on a talk show, and November 13, for “The View.”
Holtermann said she didn’t accept the orders because she was unsure if she could fulfill them with the work that needed to be done.
A video has been posted showing Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella at a press event addressing the issue. He mentions that the business has been in Staten Island for 145 years.
After Fossella speaks, he introduces the owner, Jill Holtermann, who talks about the impact this has had on her family’s business. Thankfully, it has boosted business instead of hurting it.
Meanwhile, Goldberg claims that the bakery did this as a personal attack.
On her Instagram, she said,
“There seems to be a lot of talk about the dessert I requested for my birthday show. It does seem a little odd that when we called a few weeks before my birthday and we were told they couldn’t process the order for my birthday because of an equipment failure. But somehow they were able to accept an order of a different 48 of the same dessert when somebody else called without using my name.
But it’s all okay, y’all, because I enjoyed my delicious dessert and I had a happy, sweet birthday. Nothing better than that.”
Maybe not everything is politically motivated. Most businesses don’t care or ask who you vote for, although Goldberg and “The View” crew have gone out of their way to be insulting to those who voted for Donald Trump.
So, who knows?
