Which Comics Are Inspiring Fantastic Four’s Director? Only the Best!

Now that the hype around Deadpool & Wolverine has started to calm down, we had to return to the reality that the current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is dire with one possible reprieve: the upcoming Fantastic Four movie.

Will a studio that gave us The Marvels, She-Hulk, and the third Ant-Man movie be able to pull itself out of the nose dive and do justice to one of the comic book world’s greatest teams? It’s more than possible!

Comicbook uncovered an interview from last year where The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman reveals where he will draw inspiration from when it comes to bringing the quartet of superheroes to life. In an interview with Inverse, Shakman explained that he went to the source: Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and the slightly more recent John Byrne stories.

I’m looking at the comics themselves. I’m a huge comic book fan. I’ve been a big fan of the Fantastic Four since I was a kid. So going back to Kirby and Lee and Byrne and following all the way up to what’s happening, certainly Hickman and Waid and Ryan North, what he’s been doing. I’m trying to figure out who these characters are to me and how to bring them to life in the best possible way, and that’s really where I’ve started and how we’ve approached it.

If only Chloé Zhao and the Firpos had done this when making 2021’s Enternals

Everything we see and hear about The Fantastic Four: First Steps makes it look like the cast, and Shakman appears very enthusiastic about the script. Thankfully, unlike other adaptations, we haven’t heard actors or writers speak out about how they disliked the classic Fantastic Four comics.

Considering that the three previous on-screen incarnations of Marvel’s first family have varied from grim to goofy, it’s hard to pinpoint how they’ll fit into the mostly average audience-friendly MCU.

How do you successfully pull off a massive being like Galactus or the fan-favorite Thing? Early footage shown off at San Diego Comic-Con gave us some hope, but only time will tell!
