Today, the Disney Parks Blog posted an article recognizing the K9 Cast Members and their security handlers. It is a fun read you can find here. But it got me wondering what happens to the dogs when they retire? Security members may stay, but their K9 partners usually retire much earlier.
The Pluto Unit at Disneyland
In the article, they mention that the K9 unit is playfully called the “Pluto Unit”, at least it is in Disneyland.
That unit is currently comprised of 28 trained dogs that reside in a special kennel. These dogs were trained offsite and have to pass many tests to be certified as a K9 officer.
From there, they are assigned to a specially trained K9 handler and they start working together before the dog is settled into the resort kennel. Once they arrive at Disneyland they are made official Cast Members and even get their own ID.
After their service time is up, the dogs are retired, but where do they go?
What happens to the K9 when they retire?
After they get their own retirement party, the dogs are then first offered to their handlers in a one-dog, one-handler program.
While we do not know Disney’s specific guidelines for cases where handlers cannot adopt their K9 partner, the procedures are likely similar to those of other K9 units. In those instances, the dogs are offered to other K9 officers first, and if no one can take the dog, there are special re-homing programs available to ensure the canines are given the best home possible.
I have a feeling most of these good bois and girls go home with their handlers.
Seeing the K9s patrol makes me happy. I wish the four-footed cast members all the best and lots of treats!
