What Ever Happened To The Armor Wars Movie?

This past weekend at the annual San Diego Comic Con, Marvel unveiled their big plans for the remainder of the Multiverse Saga. From a sneak peek of upcoming films like Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, to an in-development presentation of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, to the announcement that Robert Downy Jr. will portray the villain Doctor Doom in Avengers 5 & 6.

However, there were a few noticeable absences, including, but not limited to, the upcoming Blade reboot, the Eyes of Wakanda series, the Ironheart series, and the Daredevil: Born Again series. But perhaps one of the biggest absentees was the Armor Wars movie.

Originally announced as a series for Disney+ in the vein of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the Armor Wars show was set to focus on James Rhodes, aka War Machine (Played by Don Cheadle), as the lead protagonist. Following the revelations made in Secret Invasion, War Machine is tasked with finding out who has stolen Tony Stark’s Iron Man technology to make weapons of their own. Riri William aka Ironheart (Played by: Dominique Thorne) was also set to appear, possibly as his protégé.

It was later announced that the show would be reworked into a movie, making it the unofficial fourth Iron Man movie. Much like Falcon taking over the mantle of Captain America, War Machine would seemingly become the next Iron Man (Which did happen in the comics with Rhodey as “Iron Man” taking part in the original Secret Wars story).

However, since the announcement that Armor Wars was becoming a movie, there has been little to no news regarding its status. It was even absent from Marvel’s 2022 MCU Phase 5 & 6 SDCC panel. As of this writing, Armor Wars does not seem to appear on any charts for upcoming Marvel projects. While it was reported earlier this year that the project was set for 2025, nothing from this year’s SDCC panel indicated that it was true.

There is a small chance that it is still in development, but there is also the chance that it has gone the way of the 2019 Inhumans movie, never to be released.

It is a shame since, with the announcement of Robert Downy Jr.’s return, it would be interesting to see the two former friends battle it out. Only time will tell if Armor Wars will soar through the skies or end up grounded, never to fly again.
