After being in early release for most of the year, Disney Speedstorm made its way to the general public not too long ago. The free-to-play kart racing game has a lot that will appeal to Disney fans, but how much will it cost to unlock everything that’s currently in the game?
Disney Speedstorm is currently in its 4th season of content, this one featuring characters from Aladdin.
There are currently 36 characters to unlock. You get Mickey Mouse for free at the start of the game, and each level after rewards you with the likes of Donald, Goofy, etc. Other unlockables include Belle, Beast, Genie, Stitch, and even Figment. Each requires “shards” to purchase. Of course, shards will cost you real money if you’re not willing to grind.
Yes, it operates in the same way every other free-to-play game does. You get a little taste for free, then you either have to play for hours and through hundreds of races to get what you want, or you shell out tens or hundreds of dollars to fast-track to the specific racer you’ve been eyeing.

Let’s say you’re super impatient and want everything right away. We’ll use one of the current sales as an example. For 2,000 tokens, you can buy the Unlock Gaston Pack. That’s 50% of what it would typically take.
So, the standard price to unlock a single racer, based on this situation, would be 4K in tokens, which is just around $40. It’s roughly 100 tokens per dollar, and the scale slides the larger the box you buy.

So, Gaston could cost you $40, and that’s all you get. There are no other Beauty and the Beast shards included or other trinkets like paint, parts, or upgrade components. However, for the next twelve hours, I can get him for $20.
Not every character is currently for sale like this. In fact, today, it’s only Gaston. If you wanted to go the other rouge and buy the season boxes, like the one for Lilo and Stitch, that’ll be a gamble. You’re not guaranteed a certain number of shards per box.
It costs 500 tokens to open three boxes, and the odds of getting what you need are very slim:

The chances of getting 2 to 6 shards for Stitch are 1% per box. 10 shards are needed to unlock a character. That’s a lot of boxes to open in the hopes of getting enough currency for only one of the three characters in that season’s event.
530 shards are available for $4.99. Let’s say you’re luck isn’t great, and you only want to unlock Stitch. It could cost you well over $150 since you’ll open three packs simultaneously.
Even if 30 packs were the magic number for one unlock (which I’m sure is nowhere close), a very conservative estimate would put the total unlock price for the current roster beyond $4,000. If you were the unluckiest person alive and had to open 97 packs to get one character, that number would be much worse.
However, patience is a virtue when it comes to free-to-play games. If you wait long enough, the savings get better. The entire racing team for Monsters, Inc. can be scooped up for 75% off. That’s 3,990 tokens. Again, it’s roughly $40.
But do you want all four characters?

Disney Speedstorm has mixed reviews since going public on Steam, but the split is slightly more favorable. Many of the complaints we saw are what you’d typically see in free-to-play games: stingy rewards, emphasis on microtransactions, and nefarious grind.
Is it a popular game? Hard to tell. As of writing this, there are 1,700 people in the game on Steam. Playstation, XBOX, and Nintendo Switch numbers are unknown.
