One of the world’s most successful children’s fantasy book franchises is making the leap to television. Disney Kids & Family and Coolabi Group have announced a deal that will bring an animated adaptation of Warrior Cats to Disney+ and Disney Channel in 2028.
The project marks the first authorized animated adaptation of the bestselling book series written by Erin Hunter.
Disney Is Looking For Its Next Big Franchise
The upcoming series will be based on the first arc of the series, Warrior Cats: The Prophecies Begin.
The books chronicle the lives, conflicts, and adventures of multiple feral cat clans living in the wild. The exciting books feature relationships, action, prophecy, and more. Fans have been incredibly excited about this series, selling more than 90 million books worldwide.
Warrior Cats has been translated into 38 languages and has been on The New York Times Best Seller list many times over the past two decades.
There is also an official fan website that sees a lot of engagement along. Fans are also very active on YouTube and TikTok, generating millions of views a year.
The franchise has also found success in gaming. Warrior Cats: Ultimate Edition on Roblox has become one of the platform’s most successful branded experiences, surpassing 735 million plays.
Ayo Davis, President of Disney Kids & Family offered this comment on the deal,
“We’re always seeking out fresh, imaginative storytelling that resonates with families around the world. Warrior Cats has inspired a generation of fans, and we couldn’t be more excited to partner with Coolabi Group to bring this phenomenal series to life on Disney+ and Disney Channel.”
A Creative Team is Already Attached to the Project
The series is being produced by Original Force, a China-based animation and gaming studio known for CGI productions.
Warrior Cats will be led by A.C. Bradley (Ms. Marvel, Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia). Bradley will be the showrunner, while Rodrigo Blaas (Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia and animation work at Pixar) will direct the series and work along with El Guiri Studios.
Will Harrison, CEO of Coolabi Group, also gave a statement about working with Disney on the project,
“Disney is the perfect partner for such a hugely loved brand, and we look forward to expanding the fanbase further both in the U.S. and globally when the series hits the small screen.”
