VisionQuest used zero generative AI, and faked it by hand instead

Showrunner Terry Matalas says no AI touched the Marvel series. The sets that look AI-generated were built that way on purpose, by people.

Marvel’s “VisionQuest” is a show about an artificial being arriving in a year when audiences hunt for AI fingerprints in everything.

Its showrunner says there are none to find.

Terry Matalas, who created the series, told ScreenRant that generative AI was not used in the production. Asked whether it played any part, his answer was “No, not at all.”

Did Marvel use AI to make VisionQuest?

No, and the reason is more interesting than the answer.

Matalas says there was no need, because the designs already “nod to how our current form of AI processes things.” The show is about artificial minds, so the production leaned into what machine-generated imagery looks like when it goes wrong, then recreated those mistakes without a machine.

What is the Mindscape in VisionQuest?

Vision’s internal world, and the place where all of that shows up.

The Mindscape is full of details that are deliberately illogical. Stair railings that lead nowhere. Chairs built into walls. Furniture with proportions slightly off in ways that are hard to name.

Anyone who has looked closely at early AI-generated images will recognize every one of those, because they are the exact errors those systems used to make. Hands with too many fingers, architecture that does not connect, objects fused into other objects.

A crew built that on a soundstage, on purpose, to comment on the technology rather than use it.

The setting also holds human representations of artificial intelligence programs from across the MCU, which gives the show a way to talk about the subject from the inside.

Why does this matter after Secret Invasion?

Because Marvel has been here before, and it did not go well.

Marvel Studios used generative AI to make the opening title sequence for “Secret Invasion” in 2023. The backlash was immediate and it has followed the studio since.

Marvel is answering the AI question before anyone asks.

When does VisionQuest premiere on Disney+?

Oct. 14, exclusively on Disney+, with new episodes following on Oct. 21 and Oct. 28.

Disney released the first full preview in August and displayed White Vision’s suit at D23.

Who is in the VisionQuest cast?

Paul Bettany returns as Vision. James Spader returns as Ultron, which is the casting note that got the loudest reaction when it was announced.

What is VisionQuest about?

It picks up White Vision’s story after “WandaVision.”

That finale left him in an unusual place. He regained the original Vision’s memories, but not the emotional connection to them, so he remembers a life without having felt any of it. The series follows him trying to work out his identity, his history and whatever claim he has on being human.

For a show built on that question, a production that refused to let a machine do the imagining is a reasonably on-theme place to start.

The AI disclosure conversation is not going away for any studio. Disney itself hired its first chief technology officer this month, Karandeep Anand, who a year ago was running Character.AI, a company Disney’s lawyers had sent a cease-and-desist over its use of Disney characters.

Two things can be true at once at a company that size, and usually are.
