SONY’s latest installment of their Spider-Man shared universe, Venom: The Last Dance, was released this past weekend with a somewhat disappointing opening. While the film is doing well in terms of audience reviews, the film’s domestic box office earnings fell below the expected numbers.
Originally believed to draw in anywhere between $65 – $70 million, the film instead drew in only $51 million. The first film in 2018 drew in $80 million in its first three-day weekend domestically while the 2021 sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage drew in $90 million. This marks the franchise’s lowest opening weekend in the United States.
While it is true that combined with the international market’s $124 million, the current total is $176 million, it still shows that the franchise’s staying power might not be as big as it once was. However, the box office may pick up with positive word of mouth.
Many assumed that the plan was for the series to crossover with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man series, so fans of that series were interested at first. However, following a rather disappointing post-credit cameo in No Way Home, that matchup may never happen.
While the latest film teases the villain Knull potentially having a bigger role as a Thanos-level threat for the Spider-Verse, it isn’t known how far SONY’s plans for their cinematic universe will go. While Kraven the Hunter is set to release this December with the Spider-Man Noir television series currently filming, the future of various other characters like Morbius and Madame Web are in question.
The end of Morbius did tease the Sinister Six becoming a team of anti-heroes the big team-up movie might not happen at this point.
What do you think? Is Venom: The Last Dance going to draw in more crowds as the weeks go on eventually? Or is this the sign that this is indeed the last time we see Venom on the big screen? Let us know your thoughts.
