Universal UK theme park names 23 contractors as work begins

Universal confirmed that enabling works are already underway in Bedfordshire and named the first 23 firms hired to build the 2031 resort. One of them is an archaeology company, which tells you something about the ground and preservation.

Universal has named the first 23 companies hired to build its UK theme park, and confirmed something fans have been waiting on for months.

Work has started.

In an update posted to the Universal UK project page, Universal Destinations & Experiences said enabling works are underway at the Bedfordshire site. That is the groundwork stage, the part that happens before anything recognizable goes vertical.

Who is building the Universal UK theme park?

The list runs heavy on British construction and engineering names.

Sir Robert McAlpine, Bovis Construction, Galliford Try, Wates Construction, Winvic, Morgan Sindall and P.J. Carey Contractors cover the building side.

Engineering and design go to Buro Happold, Mott MacDonald, Ove Arup & Partners, AtkinsRéalis, Arcadis and Gensler Europe. Landscape work goes to Gillespies. Cost and project management run through Gleeds, Mace Consult, Rider Levett Bucknall and Ridge and Partners.

Rounding it out: Blumano, Brindle & Green, Wilson James, Pinsent Masons on the legal side, and Oxford Archaeology.

That last one is the interesting name on the list.

Why does a theme park need an archaeology firm?

Because you cannot dig a hole that size in England without finding something.

Oxford Archaeology is one of the largest archaeological practices in Britain, and firms like it get written into major infrastructure projects as a matter of course. UK planning rules generally require archaeological assessment before ground is disturbed on a site of this scale, and the Bedfordshire countryside has been continuously occupied for a very long time.

Nobody has announced a find. But hiring the archaeologists before the excavators is a sign that Universal expects the ground to have hidden surprises.

When does Universal UK open?

2031, per Universal’s own timeline.

The Universal United Kingdom Resort is planned to include a theme park with several themed lands, a 500-room hotel, and a separate retail, dining and entertainment district.

Comcast NBCUniversal is putting more than £5 billion into the build, with another £1 billion committed across the resort’s first 10 years of operation. The UK government is adding £1.3 billion for local infrastructure and transport, which in practice means roads and rail capacity that Bedfordshire does not currently have.

Universal projects 28,000 jobs across construction and operation, and £50 billion in economic benefit. Those are the company’s figures, not an independent assessment.

What this means for Disney fans in Europe

Right now, if you want a major American theme park resort in Europe, you go to Disneyland Paris. That has been true since 1992 and nothing has seriously challenged it.

2031 is a long way off, and a lot changes in five years. But Universal building a full resort in southern England puts a genuine competitor inside a train ride of London for the first time, and Disneyland Paris has spent the last several years expanding hard, with a World of Frozen land and a full renaming of its second gate.

Somebody over there has seen the Bedfordshire drawings too.

Late last month the UK government met with regional leaders about how to spread the benefits around. That is the sort of meeting that happens when a project is real.
