Following the success of their 2017 film Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, DreamWorks animation delves back into the world of children’s author Dav Pilkey to adapt another on of hid hot sellers into a film. This time with his more recent Dog Man series. To help promote the upcoming release Universal revealed the first teaser trailer to help set the mood.
The film’s official synopsis reads:
When a faithful police dog and his human police officer owner are injured together on the job, a harebrained but life saving surgery fuses the two of them together and Dog Man is born. Dog Man is sworn to protect, serve, fetch, sit and roll over.
As Dog Man embraces his new identity and strives to impress his Chief, he must stop the pretty evil plots of feline supervillain Petey the Cat. Petey’s latest plan is to clone himself, creating the kitten Lil Petey, to double his ability to do crime stuff.
Things get complicated, though, when Lil Petey forges an unexpected bond with Dog Man. When Lil Petey falls into the clutches of a common enemy, Dog Man and Petey reluctantly join forces in an action-packed race against time to rescue the young kitten. In the process, they discover the power of family (and kittens!) to bring even the most hostile foes together.
The movie stars Pete Davidson as the villainous Petey, Lil Rem Howery as the Police Chief, Ricky Gervais as Flippy the Fish, Poppy Liu as Butler, Stephen Root as Grampa, Isla Fisher as Sarah Hatoff and Billy Boyd as Seamus. Dog Man himself only speaks in canine noises so he has no voice.
The film is to be directed by Peter Hastings, a well known producer and writer for various animated shows such as the original Animaniacs, Pinkey and the Brain, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness. This marks his first time directing a theatrical film.
Hopefully when this film releases January 31st of next years fans off the book series will feel very satisfied.
