Universal Orlando Unveils Dark Universe Monster Animatronics And Disney Needs To Worry

With Epic Universe opening in May 2025, Disney was likely already a bit worried about the theme park competition. If they hadn’t been worried before, they should have been now. Universal Orlando just released a teaser featuring their upcoming Dark Universe animatronics for the Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, and they look hella real!

There will be 14 of them throughout the attraction!

Dark Universe will be the area of Epic Universe based on the classic Universal Monsters characters. It was what my husband was most excited about with the new theme park.

He’s now even more excited about it after seeing the video.

Here is a look at the Universal Monsters animatronics coming to Universal Orlando’s Dark Universe.

The video features animatronics from the upcoming Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment attraction, which will be available in Epic Universe’s Dark Universe.

Just look at these animatronics; yes, they are animatronics!

Peter Carsillo, Senior Creative Director, said,

“Monsters Unchained has the most technologically advanced animated figures that have ever been built, in the attraction. They are visceral. They are powerful. They are intense. And from a technical standpoint they exceed beyond everyone’s wildest expectations for what an animated figure can do.

That these do, the way they move is so fluid and lifelike.  I just worry the attraction could break down a lot. The more technologically advanced a ride is, the more issues it faces.

Gregory Hall, Assistant Director of Creative Design, said,

“These are monsters for the next generation of fans. We wanted to make sure we kept everything that was familiar. Kept everything that was the essence of these monsters, but we wanted to take it to another level. These monsters are scary.

I think this is what people are most excited about. The fact that they are legitimately scary.

Disney is more family-friendly in their offerings, while Universal will push the thrills even further.

Frances Francheschi, Production Designer, added,

“These animated figures are moving faster than any figures we have built, and we have many of them. We have 14 animated figures across this ride floor.”

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment will likely live up to the Epic name.
