The third and potentially final film in the Venom film series, starring Tom Hardy, is set to release this weekend. The first film became a surprise hit in 2018, earning $856.1 million against a budget of $116 million. This began SONY’s push to produce more movies based on secondary characters in the Spider-Man mythos while simultaneously lending the character to Disney.
This was followed up by Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2021 which earned $506.9 Million. More movies like 2022’s Morbius and 2024’s Madame Web were not as well received and are considered some of the lowest-rated comic book movies of all time. Projects such as the Kraven the Hunter film were pushed back, while other projects like the El Muerto movie and Silk television series were scrapped.
Now, the film that started this trend, will attempt to regain audience favor with Venom: The Last Dance. This film is the end of the Venom trilogy. But will this be the last time that we see the alien anti-hero?
Recently actor Tom Hardy has expressed interest in having his character face off against the main man himself, Spider-Man. During a panel meeting at NYCC, he stated, “I would love to fight Spider-Man. I would love to fight him now. I’m happy to fight Spider-Man today, 100 percent. I would never say never. We were specifically set up to bring Venom to a movie format, and that’s what we’ve done. The Last Dance is the final piece in that trilogy, and we’re really excited about that.“
He was later asked by comicbook.com which Spider-Man actor he would want to face. Maguire? Garfield? Or Holland? He replied with: “Tom Holland, without a shadow of a doubt.“
Hardy’s version of Venom did make a brief crossover into the MCU, as in a post-credit scene of the second Venom film, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is shown on the television. This was a way for SONY to try to have a direct connection to the MCU.
However, Marvel almost immediately undid that in a post-credit scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Hardy was sent back to his universe, leaving a tiny fragment of the symbiote behind.
Will this affect the fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man film, though? When asked if he would be involved in the project, Hardy simply stated, “I’d have the script, and I don’t have that.“
Despite this, there is always a chance there could be some kind of connection when Avengers: Secret Wars releases in 2027. That is unless SONY’s continued push to develop their own Spider-Man cinematic universe doesn’t;t complicate things.
What do you think? Would you like to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Tom Hardy’s Venom cross paths? Or is it best left in another timeline? Let us know your thoughts.
