The Nightmare Before Christmas celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year. It is one of the most unique animated films ever made. It is a movie you can watch during both Halloween and Christmas, as it is a mashup of both holidays.
While not a hit at the box office when it was first released, the film has since become a phenomenon being celebrated every year during both holidays it represents with various forms of merchandise and airings on television.
Since the first film some fans have wanted some kind of further exploration of the characters and setting. While we did get that in things like Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts series and the Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge video game by Capcom in 2004, there hasn’t really been anything.
Well there is apparently a reason for that, as the story’s original creator, Tim Burton, is dead set against any type of sequel or spin-off. When recently speaking with Empire Magazine about the film’s 30th Anniversary, he went off on a little tangent about how he refuses to “sell out.”, He said:
“To me the movie is very important. I’ve done sequels, I’ve done other things, I’ve done reboots, I’ve done all that s**t, right? I don’t want that to happen to this. It’s nice that people are maybe interested in another one, but I’m not. I feel like that old guy who owns a little piece of property and won’t sell to the big power plant that wants to take my land.“
While the film is indeed beloved by many, it isn’t a stretch to assume that if Disney did try to milk the property with sequels or spin-offs, they probably wouldn’t be that good. The Nightmare Before Easter, anyone?
What do you think? Is Tim right in keeping the film safe from exploitation? Or should he allow further stories to be told with these characters? Let us know.
