The Toy Story franchise is arguably the flagship brand for Pixar animation. Not only was it their first feature-length film it has since seen multiple sequels, and spin-offs and has been expanded in both video games and television with the character of Buzz Lightyear getting his own series.
While the first two films are considered masterpieces, and the third film was seen as a decent sendoff, Disney decided to do what it does best and green-lit another sequel. 2019’s Toy Story 4, while financially successful, was somewhat divisive when it came to splitting up the gang. Now, after the flop that was 2022’s Lightyear, Bob Iger announced Toy Story 5 was in development.
Many fans have been wondering what direction the story would go now that the events of the 4th film have seemingly altered the franchise forever. Some think it might be a prequel film or perhaps a midquel/interquel film set somewhere else in the timeline sandwiched between two other films. Perhaps an adaptation of the unmade Circle 7 version of Toy Story 3 or a film about Andy’s father.
Well, now the closest thing to a hint of what we might see comes from one of the franchise’s actors, Tim Allen, best known for voicing Buzz.
In a recent interview with the YouTube channel The Movie Dweeb he was discussing his career and recent projects, when the subject of Toy Story 5 came up, he said:
“I don’t know if this is where the story’s going, but what if the whole story was through Andy as an adult, has children, and they just happen to be online and the kid goes “have you ever seen this toy?” and Andy sees that Buzz has got a hand missing and they’re selling these vintage toys and Andy gathers all of the toys up. He has to go out and find each one of them, put them back together, bring them back to his house and starts the whole thing over again with his son.“
While this story isn’t confirmed to be the official plot and is likely just Allen throwing out ideas, it does raise some questions like “How did they all end up at different places after he gave them to Bonnie?” or “Where do Woody and Bo Peep fit into this?” etc. However, it does sound like an interesting nostalgia trip and relates to parents who wish to share their childhood joys with their children.
What do you think of Tim’s take? Would you want some reunion with the toys and Andy? Let us know.
