The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Blasts Off To $372.5 Million Worldwide Opening

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” dominated the box office and proved the critics wrong with a huge $372.5 million global opening!

Mario and friends won the box office in multiple markets.

In the United States, $190.1 for the five-day opening. $130.9 million of that amount was just this past weekend.

Globally, the film brought in $182.4 million from about 80 markets.  According to NBC, Mexico was the largest market at $29.1 million, followed by the U.K. and Ireland with $19.7 million. It has yet to open in Japan, as its release date there isn’t until April 24, 2026.

I fully expect the totals to go up considerably between now and the film’s release in Japan.

How much did the film cost to make?

It isn’t clear. NBC says it was only $110 million (before marketing), but no official total has been given. Assuming the film did indeed only cost that much, it has passed the $220 -$275 million it needed to break even in the first few days of release.

This film is going to make money, and there is already talk that a third film will be greenlit soon.

Audiences and critics have very different feelings about the film

When it comes to reviews, the audience loves the movie far more than critics.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, critics have rated the film at 41% while audiences have rated “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” at 89%.

Only 176 reviews count toward the critics’ score, while thousands weigh in for the audience score.

Beyond Rotten Tomatoes, the film received an A- from Cinemascore, which is a solid number.

Overall, the film is a hit with families, gamers, and Mario fans. The Easter eggs and nods to years of gaming lore help make this movie a hit.

We saw the film on opening day, and I would rate it a 7.5-8. Definitely worth the trip to the local theater to see it on the big screen.

I fully expect this film to follow in the footsteps of the first film and go over $1 billion.
