The Princess Diaries in Concert will have its world premiere on Friday, Nov. 27, at the Eventim Apollo in London. The 2001 Disney movie plays in full on a big screen while a live orchestra performs John Debney‘s score in sync.
“John Debney’s music in this film scored the hearts of an entire generation,” conductor Macy Schmidt said in the announcement. She said the musicians “can’t wait to bring that magic to life.”
Tickets went on sale Friday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m. U.K. time. That’s 5 a.m. Eastern, so if you’re reading this in the U.S., they’re already on sale.
Who’s playing The Princess Diaries in Concert?
The Sinfonietta, an all-women orchestra, will play the score, with Schmidt conducting.
The show comes from Overture Global Entertainment, working with GEA Live and Disney Concerts.
Will The Princess Diaries in Concert come to the U.S.?
Yes, eventually. Organizers say a North American tour and a U.K. and Europe tour are both planned for 2027.
No cities or dates have been announced. The official site, princessdiariesinconcert.com, is where those will land first.
For now, London gets it first and alone. One night, one city, then everyone else waits for 2027.
Who wrote the music for The Princess Diaries?
John Debney composed the score for the 2001 film, and he’s had a busy fall.
The same week this concert was announced, Debney was confirmed to introduce Hocus Pocus at a fan event at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on Oct. 9. He scored that one too, back in 1993.
His Disney credits run deep. Debney also scored The Emperor’s New Groove and Chicken Little, plus live-action films like Elf for other studios.
How does a live-to-film concert work?
The whole movie plays on a giant screen with the dialogue and sound effects intact. The only thing pulled out is the score, and the orchestra plays it live, timed to every scene.
So you still hear Julie Andrews. You just hear real strings under her instead of a recording.
The pop songs on the soundtrack, like Myra’s “Miracles Happen (When You Believe),” are a separate question. Organizers haven’t said how those will be handled at the show.
What’s the story of The Princess Diaries?
In case it’s been a minute: Anne Hathaway plays Mia Thermopolis, an awkward San Francisco teenager who finds out she’s the heir to the throne of Genovia, a tiny European country.
Julie Andrews plays her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, who has to turn Mia into a princess in a hurry. Garry Marshall directed.
The movie opened in August 2001 and was a hit, which led to The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004. It was also Hathaway’s film debut, which kind of launched everything that came after.
Is The Princess Diaries 3 happening?
It’s in the works, but slowly.
Disney announced a third movie in late 2024, with Adele Lim of Crazy Rich Asians fame attached to direct. In July 2026, Hathaway told Deadline the team had to “start over” on the story, and then had “a story breakthrough.”
There’s no release date, and the cast beyond Hathaway hasn’t been locked in publicly.
So the concert tour is the closest thing to new Princess Diaries that fans are getting in 2026. It’s the same movie, just with a room full of violins where the soundtrack used to be.
