A new rumor coming from Variety has many “Blade” fans thinking the South Park “Joining the Panderverse” special might not be too far off the truth. According to their latest Marvel article it seems that the upcoming “Blade” reboot almost went with a female-led, lesson-driven narrative over an actual Blade movie.
In their article, they discussed how Mahershala Ali was signed on for the film that was originally supposed to be released this year. However, after “at least five writers, two directors, and one shutdown before production,” the film has ended up in limbo and has even been pushed back until 2025.
One source told them that the story even made the titular character the fourth fiddle in their own film.
“But the project has gone through at least five writers, two directors and one shutdown six weeks before production. One person familiar with the script permutations says the story at one point morphed into a narrative led by women and filled with life lessons. Blade was relegated to the fourth lead, a bizarre idea considering that the studio had two-time Oscar winner Ali on board.”
This almost cost them Ali until Kevin Feige stepped in and hired the writer of “Logan,” Micheal Green, to restart the entire thing. Now with a much lower budget than other Marvel films.
“Amid reports that Ali was ready to exit over script issues, Feige went back to the drawing board and hired Michael Green, the Oscar-nominated writer of “Logan,” to start anew. Speculation around town is that the studio is looking to make the film, now slated for 2025, on a budget of less than $100 million — a deviation from Marvel’s big-spending strategy.”
It seems that Disney and Marvel are trying to salvage the train wreck of the “Blade” reboot. Most fans don’t even know why Disney is trying to reboot these films, as the original films already got it right the first time.
Thank goodness they scrapped a film where Blade wasn’t even the main character of his own movie.
