I guess Pedro Pascal didn’t kiss enough men because now that the social media embargo is up, early impressions of the film are allowed to be posted, and it’s a mixed bag for sure.
So far, the review embargo is still in place and will remain until May 19 at 9 AM EST, but the social media embargo is up, so those who have seen the film can give non-review impressions.
These first impressions are a mixed bag. Disney does tend to give access to smaller outlets that they know will give it a favorable review. Some of these comments come from Star Wars/ Mandalorian fan accounts with not many followers.
Overall, it seems people love it or hate it. Not much middle ground with the biggest complaint being that it feels like more of the TV show. Unfortunately this was what people were afraid of.
Here are some of the comments.
If you like The Mandalorian, you’ll have a good time with #TheMandalorianandGrogu . If you don’t, this won’t change your mind.
Little long and the script needed another pass, but I enjoyed the low stakes adventure. It is clearly a product of Jon Favreau’s specific interest. pic.twitter.com/4Xzi7jINka

Ludwig never disappoints, and the score is pure serenity 🎶#TheMandalorianandGroguhttps://t.co/eqPMUmvaVf

A fan account is of course going to give it a positive review.
this is a film that must be seen on the biggest screen possible. #TheMandalorianandGrogu is an exciting, fun ride from start to finish full of heart. what a wonderful movie 🥹 pic.twitter.com/dpnugh5tqq

THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU is…fine? An inoffensive, technically impressive spectacle that’s kinda a snooze fest. Very much structured like an abridged season of the tv show which unfortunately plays like watching the cutscenes of a Star Wars video game instead of playing one.… pic.twitter.com/ih8MGQ6mNR

The Mandalorian and Grogu is a major return to form for Star Wars. All the things that make Star Wars special are here: whimsy, adventure, weird monsters, action, heart, and rolling Hutts. The score is a beating heart. Star Wars fans should be thrilled by this. pic.twitter.com/c4DhB4OO53

The Mandalorian and Grogu: the marketing had me worried, but this movie is actually a lot of fun. Yes it does feel like a supersized high budget few episodes of the tv show – more of an adventure of the week than a huge galactic event story. If you like the show you’ll love this.…

MANDALORIAN & GROGU: finally, they made a Star War for me to despise! Some cute moments can’t save it from feeling terminally dull & offensively inoffensive. Feels like marathoning the blandest episodes of the show that are also totally inessential. A waste of time & potential. pic.twitter.com/rKAp3M9eAU

#TheMandalorianAndGrogu is one of the weakest Star Wars movies.
An emotionless, predictable experience that doesn’t push Din Djarin anywhere interesting. Dull, unexciting fight scenes; just CGI monsters. Action figures mashed together.
A long, colorless made-for-TV movie. pic.twitter.com/DoOpve0fPC

#TheMandalorianandgrogu is an action-packed inter galactic EPIC filled with jaw-dropping sequences that will leave any Star Wars fan ecstatic! I couldn’t help but smile the entire film. I can’t wait to watch it again. THIS IS THE WAY. pic.twitter.com/vwIyQ35SCi

Disney and Lucasfilm are sparing no expense promoting the heck out of this one. Currently, the box office estimates are not great. Just a few days ago, the estimates had the film bringing around $86.5 million for its opening. The entire North American run is estimated to hit between $152 million and $228 million. This is not great.
I look forward to seeing actual reviews from audience members and not critics.
“The Mandalorian and Grogu” will release in theaters in a week.
