Earlier this year it was announced that the fan favorite adult animated series King of the Hill would be returning via Hulu. The series ran from 1997 – 2009 and was co-created by animator and actor/comedian Mike Judge and writer/producer Greg Daniels. The show was well known for its unique style of humor which was more grounded in reality when compared to other shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy.
Despite many of the original creative team returning, there has been a few concerns from fans over possible “changes” coming to the series. These concers were raised when it has been said that the revival would potentially be a time skip set years after the 2009 finale. There were also concern over new voices due to two of the actors, Brittany Murphy and Johnny Hardwick, have since passed away.
Well now another concern has been raised over the character of Kahn Souphanousinphone, Hank’s immigrant neighbor from Laos and father of Connie, Bobby Hill’s on and off love interest. It appears that, according to Greg Daniels, the character will either not be returning at all or will potentially be recast.
In an interview with TV Line Daniels said:
“I’m not sure whether Kahn’s coming back. But I think we would most likely replace Toby’s voice for Kahn. Like, if we were casting today, we wouldn’t have cast him. But we cast it in 1997.“
“Most animation casts play multiple roles. Toby Huss initially played Hank’s father Cotton Hill and was cast for that, and then Kahn came up later. And most productions, especially back then, didn’t have the budget to hire a special performer for each voice. But it’s different now.“
This act of censorship strongly resembles another one of Fox’s classic animated shows The Simpsons when the character of Apu, voiced by Hank Azaria, was completely removed from the show following a 2017 documentary The Problem with Apu, which criticized the character and its portrayal of Indian-Americans.
It is unknown how far this type of censorship might go. Not just for King of the Hill, but for other reboots/revivals across Hollywood.
What do you think? Should they censor Kahn? Or should they keep him the way he is?
