Park Geon-roung was six when he danced in the Baby Shark video that became the most-watched clip on YouTube. He’s 17 now, and his debut single “WAVE” arrives August 20 under the name Baby Shark Boy, featuring Joohoney of Monsta X.
The little boy doing the shark-jaw arm motions in a video that has been watched more than 17 billion times is now 17 years old, and he’s putting out a record.
Park Geon-roung was six when he filmed “Baby Shark Dance” for Pinkfong in 2016. The clip went on to become the most-viewed video in YouTube history, holding the global top spot for 69 straight months and becoming the first video ever to pass 10 billion views.
Now he’s releasing a single under the stage name Baby Shark Boy.
What the song is
The debut single is called “WAVE,” and it arrives August 20.
The Korean-language track features Joohoney of Monsta X, a well-established rapper and producer with writing credits across most of his group’s catalogue. Park co-wrote the lyrics himself.
The song folds in elements of the original “Baby Shark” hook as a nod to where he started, built into a synth-pop track. A documentary about the making of it is also planned.
“Ten years ago I was dancing next to Baby Shark,” Park said. “Now, I wanted to share my own voice and a story I wrote myself.”
He wasn’t actually the voice on the original.
The vocals on “Baby Shark Dance” belonged to a different child performer. Park was the dancer, and it was his open-mouthed shark pose that became the clip’s signature image, the reason a generation of parents can picture his face without ever having known his name.
He’s not entirely new to performing, either. He was part of a K-pop kids’ group that debuted in 2020, and he returned in short-form videos last year for the song’s 10th anniversary, which drew 22 million views on its own.
What Pinkfong is actually doing
Pinkfong told the Korea Herald that this is a one-off project rather than a standard K-pop idol debut, and that decisions about his future activities will be made after the single comes out.
That said, the ambition is visible. Pinkfong has built Baby Shark into films, series, and specials, and moving a recognizable human face from the original video into the music market is a way of extending the brand past preschool audiences.
For a kid who spent a decade as the most-watched child on the internet without most viewers knowing his name, releasing a song he helped write is a reasonable way to introduce himself.
Whether the audience follows him past the novelty is the part nobody can plan.
