It’s here! The first teaser trailer for 2024’s Ghostbusters Frozen Empire has dropped on Sony’s YouTube channel! If you were worried the story would be rehashing Ghostbusters 2, I’m happy to say that’s not the case … probably.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire kicks things off by raising the stakes. The paranormal happenings aren’t inconveniencing people or covering the city in slime. This time, the giant horned baddy can freeze people to death.
New York is enveloped in ice in July, causing massive casualties and threatening the containment grid inside Ghostbusters HQ. Ray Stantz chimes in and calls what’s happening “the Death Chill – the power to kill by fear itself.” Will the Spengler family be able to tackle this new threat?
Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and McKenna Grace return and will all don proton packs and flight suits. Billy Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson also appear in the 2-minute teaser trailer.
Patton Oswald is, apparently, the movie’s comic relief. He looks like he is playing himself based on what we see here. So, hopefully, you’re a fan of his, or else, like with me, you’ll groan a bit.
Although not addressed in the trailer, the attached synopsis points to an artifact being the cause of the new Hell on Earth. While not totally original, it is a trope used several times in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon to great effect; see the episode Knock, Knock for one of the best examples.
We’ll find out the whole story next year!
“In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.“
With a 2024 release date, this could mean the Ghostbusters may return to Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights!
