Taika Waititi Changes His Tune On His Star Wars Project

Taika Waititi is a name that went from celebrated to questioned within the past six or so years. His contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe began with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok which was loved by both critics and audiences. However, five years later when he made the 4th Thor film Thor: Love and Thunder his style of filmmaking hasn’t been as widely liked.

In 2020, before the Love and Thunder backlash, it was announced that he would be both writing and directing a Star Wars film at Lucasfilm. The project has had very few announcements since then due to the director’s busy schedule, along with potential issues at Lucasfilm regarding numerous Star Wars projects getting greenlit and then canceled.

Not long ago though, Waititi gave an update on his project that seemed to do more harm than good. When promoting his most recent film Next Goal Wins he was asked by Variety about any updates regarding the project. He stated “It’s gonna p*ss people off.” He was most likely joking but the internet didn’t react well.

Weeks after that statement, Waititi has now seemingly turned 180° on his stance, and during an interview on the Kelly Clarkson Show, he made the following statement:

Yeah, I’ve been developing that for a few years. But, I think, with any film, but that one in particular, it’s something I’d really like to get that one right. So I don’t wanna rush it. It’s just going to bobble along on the side. It’s exciting. I want to capture that joy and the entertainment of those early ones. The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi. Yeah, so I’m trying to figure that out. It’ll happen!

It isn’t known when his Star Wars film will be released, but these seemingly conflicting statements aren’t doing him any favors.
