‘Super Mario Bros. Movie 2’ Will Feature “Deep Cuts” Easter Eggs

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, while not that deep as far as the plot goes, did a great job of incorporating a lot of the plumbers’ past via subtle and in-your-face references. That trend isn’t going to stop with the sequel, according to Toad (Keegan-Michael Key).

While speaking to Men’s Journal, the actor hinted about what we should expect from The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2:

I feel like what they’ve done creatively is they’ve really widened out the universe that these characters live in and we’re going to meet some new folks. We’re going to meet some new folks that are old favorites and some folks that I think are really deep cuts, but because of the way the story’s laying itself out right now, those characters are going to be very intriguing.

As the Marios have been in so many different types of games with characters from several contrasting mediums, what is considered a deep cut? Will the Mario Universe cross with anything else from the World of Nintendo? It somewhat did in the first film by incorporating Donkey Kong.

Could Mario and Luigi encounter a Metroid? Mother Brain? Pit? I doubt we’ll see another Mario Kart segment, but what about Mario Party?

It’s good to see Key so enthusiastic about the sequel’s fan-pleasing content, especially when so many people who have taken over other adaptation projects are antagonistic toward fans (The Witcher, for example).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was expectedly well-received. It brought in over $300M globally at the box office. Like the Sonic the Hedgehog adaptation, the film should show studios and writers who think subverting expectations won’t breed success.

Nintendo and Universal Pictures will, hopefully, not tamper too much with the winning formula, and the sequel will have a more engaging plot while staying true to the popular video game franchise.
