‘Star Wars Outlaws’ Patch Forces Players to Ditch Saves

Oh, Ubisoft. Will you ever learn? Star Wars Outlaws has not officially launched yet, and a patch is already causing some players to restart the game from the beginning!

Those who purchased the $109 and $129 versions of the game got three days of “early access” to the latest adventure in a galaxy far, far away. However, those who were playing on the PS5 may be forced to lose their progression thanks to a new patch, according to IGN.

Patch 1.000.002 went live two days ago, and the notes Ubisoft sent along outline a huge caveat for those who apply the fix:

To best experience the Outer Rim, we rolled out a maintenance to make sure everyone is playing the latest version of the game. As one of the players affected who had access to an older version of the game, we are aware you might be encountering some issues after this recent patch. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused…Once you’ve confirmed you have the latest version, please start a new save to fully enjoy Star Wars Outlaws as our team intended. If you continue on a prior save, you will unfortunately face issues and progression blockers.

Having played the game for about two days on Xbox, I can tell you that the introductory stage and first “open world” area are slogs. Having to redo the buggy and boring stealth sections just because of a patch is something we shouldn’t be dealing with when it comes to AAA (or is it AAAA) games.

Ubisoft’s rollout of this patch is as ill-planned as the game itself. Those who do not read the fine print will encounter roadblocks if they attempt to continue their day-one saves. Luckily, news about this maintenance flaw is now floating all around the internet.

Star Wars Outlaws officially launches on August 30. Major gaming sites have given it weirdly positive reviews, while YouTubers have been less than favorable. Considering how bland the gameplay is right from the start, the 9/10 scores are somewhat fishy.

Having experienced the game myself, I find the overly positive reviews suspicious because they sound more like sponsorships than critiques of a game with many bugs. It’s a game that relies heavily on stealth, but that core mechanic is oversimplified and sometimes outright broken.

During my time with Kay Vess and her toyetic companion, I saw several lifeless character models, including Kay herself. While she looks OK in pre-rendered cinematics, the in-game version of the smuggler is ugly.

Then there are the multiple mini-games Outlaws forces you into, including unintuitive rhythm-based lock-picking and what amounts to hacking via Wordle. Even Ubisoft knew that players would dislike these mechanics as the accessibility options allow you to enable Games Journalist mode, which allows you to smash buttons randomly to bypass these segments.

Oh, and you’ll encounter them way more than you should. Get ready to see that lock-picking screen in rapid-fire succession, even early on during the pre-title screen part of the game.

I would undoubtedly advise prospective buyers to wait. Like with most Ubisoft games, they offer massive discounts a couple of weeks after launch. Get it at that time. Or, subscribe to Ubisoft+ and forgo the $129.
