Star Wars Galaxy's Edge Disneyland BD-1 Droid

Star Wars BD-1 Droids Paraded Through Galaxy’s Edge!

Visitors to Disneyland’s version of Galaxy’s Edge got a pleasant surprise yesterday when some new droids went on a cute little parade. Imagineering is finally delivering the type of stuff we’ve wanted for a long time!

Thanks to Lucasfilm’s robotics engineer Mike Senna, I first spotted the BD Droid parade on LinkedIn. Unfortunately, linking videos from the site here isn’t working. So, we took to YouTube and found a couple from FindingTheForce and WDW News Today.

The BD-1-styled droids first appeared in the standout Star Wars Jedi: Survivor game from Titanfall’s Respawn Entertainment. Although these real-life animatronics aren’t as agile as the in-game character, this is still a massive advancement in immersion at Galaxy’s Edge.

Each BD-1 looks to sport its own personality, thanks to being individually controlled by a cast member nearby. Said cast members appeared to be using customized handheld PCs, similar to a Steam Deck or ASUS ROG Ally.

The initial display of these new Imagineering bots is still limited, but the possibilities are endless. Sadly, roaming BD-1s may not be the norm for a while, but hopefully, we’ll see them appear at Disney’s Hollywood Studios soon.

The original pitch for Galaxy’s Edge featured loads of interactivity with characters from George Lucas’s Star Wars universe. However, due to budget cuts, fans got a stripped-down experience focusing mainly on the Disney Sequel Trilogy.

After several years, advancements in what the Disneyland and Hollywood Studios offered changed very little. Focusing only on things created after Disney purchased Lucasfilm has been a detriment.

However, the timeline is inconsistent since visitors have seen Grogu and Din Djarin roaming the themed section of the park. Disney wants the best of both worlds but refuses to swap out the characters for the ones most Star Wars fans love.
